Tea workers rally for pay hike in Moulvibazar
Tea Workers Federation, front organisation of Socialist Party of Bangladesh (Basad), held a rally on the premises of Moulvibazar Press Club on Wednesday, marking 'Tea Workers' Day' and calling for ensuring the workers' rights.
The day is observed in remembrance of the massacre of tea workers by the Gurkha forces of the British government in 1921 while the workers were on their way to the Chandpur launch ghat on a "Mulluk Chal" march.
Maintaining physical distance, the tea workers took part in the rally.
The meeting was chaired by Sajibul Islam Tushar, organiser of Tea Workers Federation. Biplob Madraji Pasi, a member of Tengra Union Parishad of Moulvibazar district, and Dipankar Ghosh, central general secretary of Tea Workers Federation, spoke on the occasion.
Raihan Ansari, former general secretary of Socialist Student Front district branch, Biswajit Nandi, vice president of the student front district branch, Maruf Hossain, its general secretary, were also present among others.
Speakers at the rally demanded that the daily wage of tea workers be raised to Tk400, and adequate allocation be made for the education and health sectors.
