DMP to organise national conference on preventing extremism
The conference will be held from December 9-10 at capital’s International Convention City Bashundhara
The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will arrange a two-day long conference titled "National Conference on Preventing Violent Extremism – NCPVE 2019".
The conference will be held from December 9-10 at the capital's International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB).
Think tanks, 87 non-government organisations, donor organisations, 80 concerned persons from different embassies and the stakeholders, who are working to countering or preventing extremism, militancy, will join the two-day long programme.
"Such a national-level conference will take place for the first time in the country," said Abdul Mannan, CTTC unit's deputy commissioner and secretary of NCPVE – 2019 advisory committee.
The conference will be held in collaboration with the non-government organisation (NGO) "Rupantar" under Stop Violence Coalition (SVC) network. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Nations (UN) will assist with technical support for the event.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan will inaugurate the conference on Monday while the Inspector General of Police Dr Mohammad Javed Patwary, DMP commissioner Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, USAID's Deputy Mission Director Jhon Alella will be present as special guests.
"Operation or crackdown is just a part of countering militancy but not the only solution to combat the ideology of violent extremism," Mannan said.
He also said militants across the country radicalise the strayed people by "brain-wash" and we have to counter the situation with the de-radicalisation theory.
Before the conference, the CTTC also arranged a dialogue with some militants who are now leading a normal life.
The CTTC has arranged extensive campaigns through rallies, workshops, seminars and other programmes to counter the extremism in the country.
