Thousands protest for relief in Rajshahi
“We will die because of coronavirus, but we do not want to die of hunger.”
Thousands of people have joined a protest in demand for relief in Rajshahi city today morning.
The protesters from Baje Kajla area of the city blocked a road at Kedul intersection.
The protesters said all the people in Baje Kajla area are very poor and have low-income. The men make a living by driving rickshaws, vans and autorickshaws. Most of the women work as housemaids.
But currently, most of them are jobless due to the Covid-19 pandemic. There is no food in the houses. Thousands of people in the area did not receive any relief. They are living a hunger-stricken life, they said.
One protester said he has five members in his family. They did not get any relief. They are living a very inhuman condition without getting relief. "We will die because of coronavirus, but we do not want to die of hunger."
Another protester said, "We had to stop driving autorickshaws. There is no work. What should we eat? We have not received any relief either. The councillor has only given relief to people he knows. No one from Baje Kajla area got relief."
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police's Boalia Police Station Officer in Charge, Nibaran Chandra Barman, said, "People were protesting for relief by blocking the road. We went and removed them from the road."
