Why the two trains hit each other in Brahmanbaria
'Turna Nishita did not obey the signal'
The driver of the Turna Nishita train apparently disobeyed the signal and hit Udayan Express in Kasba early today, said Brahmanbaria Deputy Commissioner Hayat-ud-Douwla Khan.
Mandabagh Railway Station Master Zakir Hossain Chowdhury also blamed the Turna Nishta's driver, saying, "The Udayan Express was entering line number one when Turna Nishita was signalled to stay in the outer."
"But the driver of Turna Nishita train did not obey the signal and entered the main line, which caused the fatal accident. I cannot be held responsible for the incident," he added.
Sub-Inspector Md Iqbal Hossain, who was on one of the trains during the accident, said, "The accident occurred when Turna Nishita hit the last three compartments of Udayan Express when the latter was changing the track at the station."
After visiting the spot, Railway Secretary Mohammad Mofazzal Hossain said, "Rescue operations are underway here and Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujon is on the way to Kasba."
When asked about "one driver disobeying the signal", the railway secretary said, "Two probe committees have been formed to investigate the accident. Nothing can be said before receiving the probe report."
The families of the deceased passengers were given Tk25,000 each and steps were taken to send the bodies to their respective homes.
At least 16 people were killed and dozens injured as Udayan Express and Turna Nishita collided at Mandabhag Railway Station on Dhaka-Sylhet route in Brahmanbaria's Kasba at around 3am Tuesday.
