An alleged drug dealer was killed and a constable injured in a "gunfight" with Detective Branch (DB) of police in Mymensingh on Friday.

The deceased Rubel, of Zamirdia village of Bhaluka upazila, had seven cases against him in Mymensingh and Gazipur. The injured constable of police is Sujan Chandra Saha.

Officer-in-Charge of Mymensingh DB police Shah Kamal said: "On information of some drug dealers were peddling drugs in Habirbari - Jamirdia road, two patrol team of DB police conducted a drive there."

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the criminals opened fire, forcing police to retaliate in self-defence, the OC claimed.

At one point of the gun battle, Rubel sustained bullet injuries and his accomplice fled the scene. Police then rushed him to Bhaluka Upazila Health Complex where duty doctor declared him dead, he added.

Police sent his body to Mymensingh College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
