Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said Bangladesh police has started the process of dismissing 26 police officials from the force following their failure in dope tests.

The DMP chief made the remarks while inaugurating the Mirpur Division Deputy Commissioner (traffic)'s office in the capital's Mirpur area on Saturday.

Md Shafiqul Islam said, "We have conducted drug tests on our members who are suspected of taking drugs. Of those, 26 officials tested positive. Their expulsion from the force is being processed."

"We believe that taking action against them will send a clear message to the rest that the Bangladesh police will not spare anyone. As a result of our initiative, many have come back from the wrong path," he said.

The DMP chief added that the police members who take drugs or are involved with drug dealers will be arrested after filing cases against them. There is no relaxation on this issue.

The same action will be taken against police members involved in drugs as action being taken against a drug dealer, he also said.

Former DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia, in a monthly crime conference, asked officers in charge (OCs) of all DMP police stations to make a list of police officials who are suspected of taking drugs.
