2 Japanese held with gold bars at Dhaka airport
The detainees are Takeo Mimura and Shuichi Sato
Two Japanese nationals were detained with 30 gold bars weighing over 12 kilograms at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at the early hours on Thursday.
The detainees, Takeo Mimura and Shuichi Sato, landed at the airport from Malaysia by AK 71 flight of Air Asia around 12.30 am, said Shahidul Islam, director general of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID).
The price of the gold bars, 10 weighing one kg and 20 weighing 100 grams, was estimated around Tk6 crore, the CIID official said.
“On secret information, we monitored all the passengers of the flight. At one stage the Japanese passengers were identified,” said Shahidul Islam.
“Primarily nothing was found in their luggage. Later the gold bars were recovered from specially sealed pockets of their half pants,” he added.
Both of them were handed over to the police and a case was filed.
This is the first time that illegal golds have been recovered from Japanese citizens in Bangladesh.
