Covid cases decline, deaths jump to 58
Bangladesh reported 5,683 new cases in the last 24 hours with an infection rate of 23.15%
Amid an alarming surge in coronavirus infections, the number of fresh cases dropped on Saturday with 5,683 new cases logged in the last 24 hours.
The positivity tally reached 6,30,277 with an infection rate of 23.15%, according to the Directorate General of Health Services. However, the overall infection rate stands at 13.26%.
Bangladesh reported 6,830 fresh cases on Friday and 6,469 the day before yesterday.
Meanwhile, the country reported 58 more deaths from the virus on Saturday which was 50 a day before. The death toll now stands at 9,213 in the country with a fatality rate of 1.46%.
Among the latest day's victims, 38 were men and 20 were women. All of them died in different hospitals across the country.
Of the deceased, 39 of them hailed from Dhaka, 12 from Chattogram, three Khulna, and two Barishal division.
Meanwhile, 24,548 samples were tested in 227 labs across the country in the past 24 hours. A total of 47,52,661 samples have been tested in the country so far.
Also, 2,364 patients were declared free of Covid-19 during the same period, raising the total number of recoveries to 549,775 with an 87.23% recovery rate.
The country's maiden cases were reported on 8 March last year and the first death from the virus was reported on 18 March.
Neighbouring India recorded 89,129 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours which took the nationwide tally to 1.23 crore, the health ministry said. India also reported 714 fatalities which is the highest since 21 October.
As of Friday, the number of Covid-19 infected people has risen to 130,934,055 worldwide and the fatalities now stand at 2,852,731, according to Worldometer.
