The district administration of Chattogram has instructed all shops, except pharmacies and kitchen markets, to shut at 6 pm in the next two weeks, in an effort to contain coronavirus infections.
Md Mominur Rahman, deputy commissioner of the district, confirmed the news to The Business Standard.
However, all emergency service outlets will remain out of the purview of the instruction.
Earlier on Wednesday, the authorities had announced closure of sea beach and other recreational centers in the district until 14 April.
During the period, no public gathering or rally can be held in the district. But hotels, motels and restaurants are allowed to operate complying with the hygiene rules.
