The Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) has arrested two members of a fraud gang involved in stealing money from ATM booths on Tuesday.
The fraudsters were arrested from in front of Midland Bank in the port city's Agrabad area, said CMP Deputy Commissioner Md Farooq Ul Haq at a press briefing held at Double Mooring Police Station on Wednesday.
The arrestees are Mohammad Shariful Islam, 34, of Dhaka and Mohiuddin Monir, 30, of Sadarghat area of Chattogram.
Police also recovered equipment used in the forgery, including pen drives, wireless mini keyboards, magnetic strip-attached ATM clone cards and weapons-from their possessions.
The fraudster gang used to loot money from ATM booths through installing malware software after inserting pen drives, says the CMP Deputy Commissioner.
The CMP said the gang used to collect the keys of the ATMs online by targeting certain bank booths. Later, they would insert a pen drive and then install malware into the ATMs.
The fraudsters used to withdraw money from ATM booths with the help of a wireless mini keyboard.
Earlier in 2013 and 2018, police arrested Shariful over money theft from ATM booths. At that time, Shariful and his associates withdrew money from an ATM booth at Pubali Bank in Narayanganj, an ATM booth at Pubali Bank in Cumilla, two ATM booths at Pubali Bank branches at Chawkbazar College Road and Chaumuhani in Chattogram.
Seven cases were filed against Shariful with different police stations across the country in connection with the ATM thefts.
He had been shown arrested in those cases, CMP DC Md Farooq said.
