A mobile court in Gourandi upazila of Barishal has sentenced a Swecchasebak League leader and a grocery store owner to six months in jail for illegally sale and purchase of relief rice.

The mobile court, headed by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Israt Jahan, delivered the verdict on Tuesday.

The accused are upazila Swecchasebak League Vice President Pradeep Dutta and grocery store owner Pankaj Saha.

Upazila Food Inspector Ashok Kumar said, "Khanjapur union has 1,906 beneficiaries under its food friendly program [FFP]. Pradeep Dutta was selected for selling relief rice at Tk10 to 953 of those people after he applied for the position at the beginning of the FFP.

"He was selected for selling the rice in the Bakai bazar area," Ashok added.

Golam Sarwar, officer-in-charge of Gourandi model police station, said, "Acting on a tipoff, we conducted an operation in Bakai bazar and caught Pradeep Dutta red handed, selling 55 sacks of relief rice to Pankaj Saha at his grocery store."

Later, upon finding proper evidence and the admission of guilt by the accused, the mobile court sentenced the duo to six months in jail and fined them Tk20,000 each. They were sent to Barishal central jail afterwards.
