Police recovered the body of an elderly woman named Sultana Suraiya with her throat slit from her residence in Tangail's West Bhuapur on Friday (15 September) morning.
The victim is the mother of Abu Shyem Akhund, news editor of The Business Standard, and wife of Freedom Fighter Abdur Rahim Akhund.
Sultana Suraiya lived alone in a house in West Bhuapur village. Her body was lying on the floor of a room locked from outside, according to the family sources.
On Thursday night, neighbours and family members found her phone switched off. They went to her house and found the light and ceiling fan switched on. Being suspicious, they peeked into the house and found the body.
"We have no enemies. It is suspected that drug addicts may have come to steal and committed the murder. A case is in process. We demand exemplary punishment to those involved in the incident, subject to a thorough investigation," her son Abu Shyem Akhund said.
Tangail Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Md Sharfuddin said the body has been sent for autopsy.
"Initially, it is believed that she was murdered a day ago. The details will be known after an autopsy and investigation into the case," he added.
