CID arrests Wanderers Club Secretary Joy Gopal in casino connection
Investigation of four money laundering cases against casino brothers completed, charge sheet submission within a week
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Joy Gopal Sorker, the secretary of Dhaka Wanderers Club from an area of Old Dhaka recently.
In the guise of doing gold business, Gopal Sorker was involved in casino operations. He also introduced Enamul Haque Enu and his brother Rupon Bhuiya (who are known as the casino brothers) to this business, said CID officials.
Imtiaz Ahmed, Deputy Inspector General of CID (organised crime) briefed the media at the CID headquarters on Tuesday about the progress of four money laundering cases against the casino brothers.
Imtiaz Ahmed said, "the CID has been investigating five cases against the casino brothers, and has completed investigations of four money laundering cases. We are going to submit a charge sheet before the court within a week accusing 91 people including Enu and Rupon."
He went on to say that "After six months of investigations, the CID has confirmed that the casino brothers have 128 flats, 20 houses with land and 25 kathas of land. Besides, CID found 91 bank accounts of the brothers. And the accounts had Tk19 core and they transacted Tk200 core in the last few years."
He said that they had bought flats, land and house with the money they earned from the casino business. Enu and Rupon's family members were even involved in the casino. Gambling was their family business, while his father was a gambler as well.
Rise of Enu and Rupon
During the press briefing, Imtiaz Ahmed said that Joy Gopal was a jewellery businessman in old Dhaka. He is also the current secretary of the Dhaka Wanderers Club.
Joy Gopal was operating a casino in the club under the guise of doing gold business. The club had been running one-ten-gams (a kind of gambling game) since 2007.
After being introduced to Gopal, Enu and Rupon started their own casino business in 2014. Also, they imported casino machines from abroad by ship.
"After arresting the casino brothers, we found the name of Joy Gopal Sorker. But he managed to go into hiding for around 9 months. Now the CID has finally arrested him," said Imtiaz, the DIG of CID.
We hope to get more information from Gopal about the casino and Wanderers Club, he added.
The CID arrested Enamul Haque Enu and his brother Rupon Bhuiya ─ both leaders of the Awami Leagues Gendaria wing ─ on 13 January from Dhaka over alleged ties to an illegal casino business.
Before that, the Rapid Action Battalion raided the home of the casino brothers at old Dhaka and seized casino equipment, Tk26.55 core in cash, one kilogram of gold ornaments, US$9,000 and FDRs worth Tk5.15 core.
