The identity of all the victims could not be known immediately. However, 14 of the victims were identified.

Of the 17, 15 were sent to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, confirmed Fire Service duty official Ershad Hossain.

The remaining two were receiving treatment in a local hospital.

Ershad said most of the victims were the workers of Radhuni Hotel and Tripti Hotel. The hotels, as well as IFIC Bank’s Board Bazar branch were damaged in the explosion.

The explosion also damaged few adjoining structures along the 120-foot-wide Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and the central reservation.

The reason for the explosion is not clear yet, Ershad said.

Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defense Station Officer Zakaria Khan told The Business Standard that firefighters recovered the injured from the spot, and sent them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, and the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation.

Gazipur Deputy Commissioner SM Tariqul Islam said a five-member probe committee, headed by Additional District Magistrate Shahinur Islam, was formed to investigate the incident.

The committee has been asked to submit its probe report within seven working days.
