National-level rapid response survey on poverty impacts of Covid-19 ends
Power and Participation Research Centre and BRAC Institute for Governance and Development jointly conducted the survey
The economy of Bangladesh is under risk as the Covid-19 health crisis continues to unfold across the country.
This crisis will be most acutely experienced by the low income population - families depending on the informal sector, especially in the urban areas, including rickshaw pullers, day labourers, housemaids, restaurant workers, vendors, auto drivers among others.
Besides, millions of workers in the rural areas, farmers, fishermen, agricultural labourers, small business owners and returning migrants who have no means to earn a living now will also suffer the same fate, according to a statement issued on Sunday.
Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC) and BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD) launched a joint large scale telephonic rapid response research project on April 1 to understand the immediate economic impact of the crisis on such families.
The survey ended on Sunday.
A cross-sectional sample of around 12,000 households in both rural and urban areas of the country were reached out.
The research intended to support better design and targeting of emergency support programs for the vulnerable population.
Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman, executive chairman, PPRC and Dr Imran Matin, executive director, BIGD will unveil the findings through a virtual press conference on Thursday, and details of the event will be separately shared later.
