Foundation stone of Healthcare Pharma’s new plant laid
The company expects to invest $423.78 million on 40 acres of land
The foundation stone of a new factory from the country's leading pharmaceutical company Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Limited (HPL) was laid at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Industrial City in Mirsarai, Chattogram on Friday, read a press release.
HPL established its first factory in Bangladesh in 1996. The company is now going to set up its second facility at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Industrial City – in the Mirsarai, Feni and Sitakunda Economic Zones.
The company initially is setting up its factory on 30 acres of land, but in the future it plans to increase it to 40 acres. As a result, the company expects to invest $423.78 million on a total of 40 acres of land.
It is initially expected that the venture will provide employment to about 7,200 people. An administrative building, warehouse, logistics area, waste management facility, water treatment plant, road, and other necessary facilities are due to be constructed on the allotted land. The rest of the land will be used for dormitories, health services, training centers, and greening. In addition to the use of environmentally-friendly technologies, an Environmental Management Plan will be adopted to ensure that there is no adverse impact on the environment.
According to the project proposal, Healthcare Pharma will set up five plants in Bangabandhu Industrial City. These are for: exportable general formulation, general formulation to meet internal needs, active pharmaceutical ingredients, penicillin, and biotech production.
Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority Paban Chowdhury, HPL Managing Director Alauddin Ahmed and senior officials of the two organisations were present on the occasion.
Paban Chowdhury said Bangladesh has been able to create an investment-friendly and healthy environment through BEZA, setting a role model for development in the world.
"Mirsarai is being built as one of the largest economic zones and industrial cities in South Asia. We hope that this will lead to an unprecedented revolution of industrialisation in the country and increase the living standards of the people as well as meet the goals of sustainable development. In addition, a green economic zone in the face of climate change will soon be built also," he added.
HPL MD Alauddin Ahmed said, "Healthcare Pharma has a reputation as a trusted brand in the country. Our medicine is being exported to various countries in Asia, Africa and the world."
Mentioning that setting up a plant in Mirsarai is a milestone for the company, he said, "If active pharmaceutical ingredients are produced in the country, the amount of raw material imports in the pharmaceutical sector will decrease."
