WHO hands over special recognition award to Dhaka Ahsania Mission for tobacco control

The World Health Organization (WHO), Bangladesh on Sunday handed over special recognition award to Dhaka Ahsania Mission for its contribution to tobacco control.

Dr Bardan Jung Rana, the WHO representative to Bangladesh, handed over the award to Ahsania Mission Health Sector Director Iqbal Masud at 1:30pm, reads a press release.

High officials of both organisations were present at that time.

Earlier, the WHO announced the award on May 31 to mark the World No Tobacco Day 2020.

The award is given annually at the national event of the day, but it was handed over at the WHO, Bangladesh office this year considering the Covid-19 situation.

Ahsania Mission received the recognition for its unique contribution to stopping the "ill tactics" of the tobacco companies and protecting the youth from tobacco and nicotine.

With its long-term commitment to control tobacco consumption, the non-government development organisation implemented different anti-tobacco programmes in Bangladesh since 1990.
