A girl has sustained severe injuries as she had to jump off a bus in Sunamganj's Dirai to escape a rape attempt inside the running vehicle yesterday.
With severe injury on her head and hand, the girl was admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital by her relatives on Saturday midnight, said physicians of the hospital.
Meanwhile, her father filed a case with Dirai Police Station accusing three unidentified people. However, the police have not been able to arrest anyone so far.
Dirai Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ashraful Islam confirmed the information of the case and said, "We are conducting drives in different places to catch the accused."
The girl, a resident of Dirai municipal area, is a graduate student of a local college and she was returning to her home in Dirai by bus from her sister's house in Lamakazi area of Sylhet.
When, the bus driver and his accomplice tried to rape her on the bus in Dirai on Saturday evening, she jumped out of the bus window to escape the rape.
"Two locals rescued my sister-in-law from the spot and admitted her to Dirai Hospital. As her condition was critical, we brought him to Osmani hospital on the advice of the doctors there," said brother-in-law of the girl.
Abdul Mukit Mukul, joint secretary of Sylhet Bus Owners' Association, came to the hospital at midnight after hearing the news.
Describing the incident as nasty one, he said, "Such incidents never happened before in Sylhet division. So we want exemplary punishment for the criminals. We will cooperate with the police to catch the accused. We will also be by the side of the young woman's family."
Dr Himanshu Lal Roy, deputy director of the hospital, said the girl had sustained head and hand injuries. The head injury seems serious.
It is learned that the incident took place in Sujanagar area of Madanpur road in Dirai upazila on Saturday evening. The driver and helpers of a 'Fahad and Maisha Paribahan bus' (Sylhet-J-11-0723), plying from Sylhet to Dirai in Sunamganj, tried to rape the college student.
After the incident, local residents blocked the road in Dirai demanding the arrest of those involved in the night.
