The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has sent letters to at least 11 government departments as part of a search for the assets of 50 top Hefazat-e-Islam leaders including Junaid Babunagari and Mamunul Haque.
The letter was sent by the ACC investigation team.
On Thursday, ACC Secretary Dr Md Anwar Hossain Howlader told reporters at the organisation's office in the capital.
He said a letter has been sent to the concerned departments seeking information needed for investigation. After receiving the information, they will be sorted out and further action will be taken.
According to the ACC sources, the letter has been sent to the assistant commissioner (land) of Fatikchhari, Hathazari, and Patiya in Chattogram; Dhaka District Registrar; Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit; Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, and Netrokona Police Super; Election Commission; and Passport and Immigration Department.
All have been asked to send related information and documents in a very short time.
Hefazat leaders have been accused of embezzling crores of taka from the organisation's funds, madrassas, orphanages, and Islamic institutions, as well as foreign aid for religious purposes. The commission decided to investigate the allegations after the allegations were found valid in the primary investigation of Bangladesh Bank and the ACC's intelligence branch.
On 17 May, the anti-graft organisation formed a 6-member investigation team led by ACC Director Akhtar Hossain Azad, high-level sources in the ACC confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
According to ACC sources, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) recently scrutinized the bank transaction information of 54 Hefazat leaders including Junaid Babunagari, Nur Hussain Kasemi, and Mamunul Haque. The commission also took note of the discrepancies found in the BFIU's progress report sent to the ACC.
The ACC is seeking information about Hefazat leaders Junaid Babunagari, Junaid Al Habib, Mamunul Haque, Ataullah Amin, Monir Hossain Qasemi, Khaled Saifullah Ayubi, Nur Hossain Nurani, Sakhawat Hossain Razi, Muhammad Ahsanzai, Muhammad Ahsanullah, and several others.
