Police have arrested a man for allegedly killing his wife and daughter over a family dispute in Ghagdahar Ghunti area of Mymensingh Sadar on Wednesday evening.
The deceased are Ruma Akhter, 38, and Nafia Akhter, 14.
The accused Shafiqul Islam Shahin was arrested from the neighbouring Kishoreganj district.
Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahmudul Islam said, "We arrested him based on confidential information within 20 hours of the double murder."
"Shahin first strangled his wife to death. Their two daughters were not at home at the time. After killing his wife, Shahin called his ninth grader younger daughter home from school saying their mother is ill. Seeing the mother dead at home, Nafia started crying and Shahin killed her as well," Mahmudul Islam said.
"The eldest daughter Sadia, 21, was at her in-laws house. Shahin brought her too and tried to kill her. When she started screaming, Shahin fled the scene. Local people rescued her and admitted her to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital," he continued.
Local people said that the accused, Shahin, is a wood trader. He also used to be a land broker used to gamble.
