Loan defaulters' list placed in parliament
The list comprises a total of 8,238 defaulters with a debt of Tk96,986.38 crore until November last year
Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has presented a list of individuals and companies who have defaulted on their loans.
The list comprises a total of 8,238 defaulters with a debt of Tk96,986.38 crore until November last year.
The minister presented the list before the House on Wednesday. It was prepared based on updated data by the Credit Information Bureau (CIB) of the Bangladesh Bank.
As much as Tk25,836.04 crore of that amount has been paid back till November last, the minister replied to a query of lawmaker Ahsanul Islam Titu.
According to the minister's 107-page list, Rimex Footwear Ltd is the top defaulter with nearly Tk1,800 crore.
Crescent Leather Products is at the second place with Tk1,300 crore defaulted loan. The third, Rupali Composite Leatherwear Ltd, has a defaulted loan of Tk1,300 crore.
AI Industries remain at the bottom on the list with the lowest Tk1 crore defaulted loan.
"A total of 25 bank directors borrowed a total of Tk1,614.77 crore from their respective institutions as of September 30, 2019. This accounts for 0.166 percent of the total loans given by those banks," the minister told the House while replying to another query.
"The directors took loans amounting to Tk1,71,616.12 crore from 55 banks except from their own institutions, which is 11.21 percent of all the loans given out," he added.
Previously on June 22 last year, the minister presented a list of top 300 loan defaulters of the country. Their debt amounted to Tk70,571 crore.
The minister also detailed about 14,617 individuals who took loans in excess of Tk5 crore from banks and other leasing companies since 2009.
