If the Covid-19 cases keep rising at the current pace, no beds at the coronavirus units will remain vacant within one week, said Health Minister Dr Zahid Maleque.
"Covid-19 cases are increasing rapidly over last few days. If the caseload remains over 5,000 daily, a number of these patients will need to be hospitalised," the minister said during the virtual inauguration of 10 new ICU beds at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Thursday.
"We are trying to add 3,500 more beds at the coronavirus units of government and private hospitals. But all seats will be occupied within one week if 500-1,000 infected patients are admitted daily.
"Then, the whole Dhaka city will not be enough to accommodate the patients," he warned.
Zahid Maleque further said, "We will not be able to control this disaster even after increasing the number of hospital. We have to restrain the infection sources to control the second wave."
Urging all to abide by the 18 directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Zahid Maleque said, "It is high time we became alert and stopped moving carelessly. Otherwise, it may turn catastrophic."
