Coastal farmers urged to pluck mango, litchi, ahead of cyclone Yaas
Coastal farmers urged to pluck mango, litchi, ahead of cyclone Yaas The Agricultural Extension Department has advised the farmers of 13 coastal districts to harvest ripe mangoes and litchis from trees ahead of cyclone Yaas.
In an advisory letter, the authorities urged the public in Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Jhalokati, Patuakhali, Barguna, Barisal, Bhola, Feni, Noakhali, Chattogram and Cox's Bazar districts, to take this step to avoid losing their crops.
"Quickly harvest ripe vegetables and fruits, especially mangoes and litchis. Avoid irrigation and using fertilizers and pesticides," the letter read.
It also advised harvesting Boro paddy that has ripened 80% or more as well. "If the harvested crop cannot be transported, pile it in the fields and cover it with plastic sheeting so that it is not damaged by wind and heavy rains," said the letter.
Satkhira Agriculture Extension Department Deputy Director, Nurul Islam, said the department has given 11 instructions, including regarding the harvesting of mangoes and litchis, to avoid possible cyclone damage.
"All the upazila agriculture officers of the district have been instructed. They will advise farmers and traders to pluck mangoes quickly," he added.
