Bribery scandal: Ex-ACC official Basir sent to jail
Public Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain said the investigation is moving forward on schedule
A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent Khandaker Enamul Basir -- suspended director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) -- to jail after rejecting his bail petition in a case filed over the exchange of Tk 40 lakh as bribe.
Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of Dhaka Senior Special Judges Court passed the order after the ACC produced him before the court.
Public Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajal said the investigation is moving forward on schedule and the accused will be punished through trial.
“The investigation team is making a serious effort to retrieve the bribe money,” he added.
A team of the anti-graft body picked Basir up from his Darus Salam residence in the city around 10:15pm on Monday.
The arrest came six days after the ACC had filed a case against Basir and suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police Mizanur Rahman over the bribery scandal.
Sheikh Mohammad Fanafillah, ACC director and also the leader of the investigation team, filed the case with Dhaka-1 coordinated district office under the ACC on July 16.
A private TV station reported recently that Mizan gave Tk40 lakh to Enamul Basir to get a clean chit in a corruption case. Basir was suspended on June 10 for allegedly leaking information to Mizan, a breach of job discipline.
Mizan was shown arrested in the case on Sunday.
