Cyclone Bulbul damages 2.8 lakh hectares of cropland
Around 19 types of crops were damaged by Bulbul
Cyclone Bulbul wreaked havoc on croplands as it hit the 16 coastal districts early Sunday.
"Crops on 289,006 hectares of land were damaged by the storm," said Chandi Das Kundu, director of Field Services Wing, Department of Agricultural Extension.
Around 19 types of crops were damaged by Bulbul, he added.
Marking the loss as minimal, the director said, "Aman paddy (Ropa) has been cultivated in 59 lakh hectares of land this year and we have a target of 1.53 crore tonnes of paddy production. The damage and loss caused by the cyclone is much less than we initially feared."
Meanwhile, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Abdul Wadud of Dacope upazila in Khulna said, "Around 5,220 houses and 1,753 families were affected by cyclone Bulbul. However, mostly Aman paddy were damaged in the area and some shrimp farms were washed away."
"Total damage caused by the cyclone could not be assessed as yet," said Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kahnaz Begum of Dumuria upazila in the district.
