The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Saturday night arrested five people in connection with the murder of businessman Shah Md Tobarak Hossain in Dhaka.
Police made the disclosure at a press briefing on Sunday.
The arrestees are Golam Rabbani, Babul Hassan alias Babu, Sohel Prodhan, Emon Hassan alias Hassan, and Al Amin alias Rihan.
Police said they also recovered Tk2.40 lakh, knives and other relevant evidences from their possessions.
Shahin and Shihab were two former employees of Tobarak. They used to look after his shop and a part of his business.
Tobarak earlier terminated them on allegation of stealing money; then the duo planned to kill him to loot money and also to take revenge, said Abdul Baten, additional commissioner of the detective branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
As per the plan, they haired the five – hailing from Chandpur and Cumilla – for executing the murder, Abdul Baten told the briefing.
Earlier on December 25, police recovered the body of Tobarak from his flat at Shanti Niketon in the city's Tejgaon area.
Introducing himself as the son of Tobarak's former caretaker Muhammad Ali, who died 10 years back, Emon first met Tobarak.
He then requested Tobarak to get him a job at his place. Emon had been working at Tobarak's place but staying at a mess in the city's Badda area.
Meanwhile, he had been passing the information regarding Tobarak to Shahin and Shihab, said Abdul Baten.
To execute the murder, the miscreants bought six knives, scotch tape and rope from Chawkbazar in the city and stored those at Emon's mess.
On December 25, they went to Tobarak's house with the weapons, tied his hands and legs with the tape, and stabbed him to death before fleeing with the looted money, added Abdul Baten.
