10 picked for Bangla Academy Award
The Nobel Prize winner for economics Abhijit Banerjee will attend the award giving ceremony
Ten eminent personalities have been named as the recipients of the Bangla Academy Award-2019 for their extraordinary contributions to Bangla literature.
Director General of Bangla Academy Habibullah Sirazi came up with the announcement at a press briefing on the Bangla Academy premises in the capital on Thursday.
Poet Makid Haider will to get the award for poetry, Wasi Ahmed for fiction, Sarachito Sarker for essays and research, Khairul Alam Sobuj for Translation, Ratan Siddique for plays, Rahim Shah for children's literature, Rafikul Islam (Bit Uttam) for Liberation War literature, Nadira Majumder for Science, Faruk Moinuddin for biography and memoir and Saimon Jakaria for folk literature.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hand over the awards to the recipients during the inaugural ceremony of Amar Ekushey Boi Mela (book fair) on February 2.
The Nobel Prize winner for economics Abhijit Banerjee will also attend the award giving ceremony.
The winners will receive a cheque for Tk 2 lakh and crests each.
The award is given in recognition of creative genius in advancement and overall contribution in the field of Bengali language and literature.
There were six categories including poetry, novels, short stories, essays, juvenile literature and translation when the award was introduced in 1960.
