Shakib to lead Mohammedan in DPL

Star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is set to lead Mohammedan in the forthcoming Dhaka Premier League.

That Shakib will skipper Mohammedan has been confirmed by the club through a press release.

The 34-year old was picked by Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) but chose DPL over the franchise league.

12 teams are going to participate in the tournament. The likes of Taskin Ahmed, Abu Jayed, Abu Hider, Shuvagata Hom and Shamsur Rahman will play for Mohammedan under Shakib's captaincy in the tournament.

Shakib said it's a big achievement to play for Mohammedan, the club he supported from childhood.

He also mentioned the importance of winning the first match and continue the momentum throughout the tournament.

"The goal will definitely be to be on top. This will be a long tournament, so we're focusing on the first match for now. It's important to begin the tournament with a win and then continue the momentum," Shakib said.

Shakib hasn't been particularly in good form in the shortest format especially with the bat. Shakib batted 12 innings in T20 format after returning from the suspension last year but couldn't go past 15 runs in 10 of them. He failed with the bat in the recently concluded ODI series against Sri Lanka as well.

Therefore, the all-rounder will be eager to get back in form with the form in the DPL.

This will be Shakib's first stint in the DPL for five years.

The left-arm spinner took 18 wickets in 8 matches for Abahani Limited who were crowned champions in 2016. He batted in 7 innings and scored 210 runs at an average of 30.00.

Five years later, Shakib is going to play for Abahani's arch-rival Mohammedan in the DPL.

‎The Premier League was suspended last year due to the corona outbreak. After a long break, the tournament is set to be held on May 31. The premier league will be held in 2019-20, but this time it will be played in a different format. Dhaka Premier League to be held in T20 format for the first time.‎
