Sumona was enjoying her slice of chocolate cake and thinking why does her little toe always get hurt?
Whenever she walked, her toe made sure to bump against something. Did her own finger wage a war? Do fingers have individual brains?
Today was Sumona's day off from work and she decided to spend it lying on bed. Hence the silly but thoroughly intriguing thoughts.
Suddenly like a storm, her aunt from next-door rushed into her room. This was nothing new because according to Sumona's mother, neighbours are like a second family.
Aunty scanned Sumona all over and said, "A grown girl like you should not wear t-shirts, your father is at home, have some shame!"
Before aunty could comment on the cake, Sumona tried to gulp it down but could not help thinking about what might come next. Perhaps a comment on gaining weight.
All of a sudden, the cake did not taste that good. Sumona set aside the spoon and began to listen to aunty blabber about 'women's safety'.
"Corporate jobs are not safe for girls. Look at Selina Apa's daughter Tanni, she teaches at a school and is doing great! Her in-laws are so happy!"
Sumona knew what was coming next so she began to yawn, thinking this might make this woman leave soon.
Aunty began to move closer to Sumona, "Has not it been years since you graduated? Your biological clock is ticking, get married before your eggs die! After all, a woman is not complete until she marries and has children."
Her eggs? Yuck! Sumona wanted to vomit but she just made a face and turned the other way.
Aunty went on "What about that boy Jishan's mother keeps insisting is your boyfriend? She has seen you with him on rickshaws a couple of times. Get married to him!"
To this Sumona replied, "Aunty, why don't you marry your daughter off? I keep seeing pictures of her with that boy Ratul in Facebook all the time!"
Aunty made a grim face and told her, "You are so sassy these days! I will tell your mother what a beyadop you are! All these feminism weirdness has gotten into you!"
After this great verdict, she stomped off.
Smirking to herself, Sumona went back to her bed. Maybe it was time to munch on some chips and binge watch Netflix.
