Veteran music composer Alauddin Ali passed away while undergoing treatment at Universal Medical College Hospital Ltd in the capital on Sunday afternoon.
He breathed his last around 5:30 pm, said Dr Ashish Kumar Chakrabarty, managing director at the hospital.
His family admitted him to the hospital in Mohakhali on Saturday, where he was under life support as his condition deteriorated.
Alauddin Ali was having breathing problems and his oxygen level was significantly low. So, he was under close observation for 24 hours.
He won the National Film Award eight times and composed music for more than 300 films during his long career since 1974.
The prominent musician made his debut as a music director with the film "Shondhikkhon" in 1975. He won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Music Director five times for the films: "Golapi Ekhon Train Ey" in 1978, "Sundori" in 1979, "Koshai" in 1980, "Jogajog" in 1988, and "Lakhe Ekta" in 1990.
He also won the same award for his lyrics composed for the song "Amar Mon-er Bhitor Onek Jala" in Mainul Hasan's film "Premik."
His genius did not go unrecognised. Alauddin Ali received the highest number of National Awards as a music director in the country.
He has given some of the famous patriotic songs like "O amar Bangla ma tor." He has also given music to the song "Muktijoddha Chetonay Deepto, Pitar Potaka Hate" written by Syed Shamsul Haque.
In 1990, during the grand celebrations of 300th anniversary of Kolkata, Alauddin Ali was accorded a reception at Salt Lake Stadium in the city, along with maestros including Salil Chowdhury and others.
He was the music director for the SAAF Games Ceremony in 1993 at Dhaka Stadium, where over 8000 artistes sang to his tune.
He was born on December 24, 1952 at Banshbari village in Munshiganj district.
Ali's father Jadob Ali, was a staff artiste at the radio. His uncle, Ustad Sadek Ali and cousins Dhir Ali Miah, Mansur Ali, Yunus Ali and Momotaz Uddin were all renowned music directors and composers of the Dacca (now Dhaka) Radio Station during the 60s.
During his formative years, the much-acclaimed composer was an associate of the legendary Altaf Mahmud. His daughter Alif Alauddin is a musician and host, while son-in-law Kazi Faisal Ahmed is the lead guitarist of Artcell.
Alauddin Ali was diagnosed with a tumour in 2015. As a result, he had been receiving treatment in Dhaka and Bangkok.
