Tk10 per kg rice sale begins
The beneficiaries of the upazila expressed their satisfaction with the quality of rice
The government has started selling rice at Tk10 per kg to the extreme poor from today as part of the Food-Friendly Programme.
The Directorate General of Food will continue the sale of this rice in 64 districts across the country till November.
"The government has to pay an annual subsidy of Tk2,625 crore for this programme," said Bogra Food Controller AM Saiful Islam while inaugurating the programme in Subagram of Bogra Sadar upazila.
The beneficiaries of the upazila expressed their satisfaction with the quality of rice.
Directorate General of Food officials said 50 lakh cardholders would get 30 kilogrammes of rice for Tk10 per kg every month.
The price of the distributed rice in retail markets starts from Tk43 per kg. So, the poor will get a discount of Tk33 under the programme.
Back in 2016, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the programme in Kurigram's Chilmari upazila.
Twenty million people receive direct or indirect benefits from this food distribution programme, which runs from March to April and September to November every year.
