Shataranji, a traditional handicraft of Rangpur, was recently recognized as a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Bangladesh.
Earlier on 11 July 2019, BSCIC had applied to DPDT to register Shataranji as a GI product.
On Thursday, the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT), registered Shataranji as a GI product and presented the GI certificate to the chairman of the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) at a seminar.
Minister of Industry, Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, was chief guest at the seminar on intellectual property, according to a press release.
Industry Secretary Zakia Sultana presided over the seminar while State Minister for Industries, Kamal Ahmed Majumder, was a special guest.
Md Abdus Sattar, registrar of DPDT, gave the welcome speech at the event, while DPDT Deputy Registrar, Md Obaidur Rahman, presented the keynote address at the seminar.
Additional Secretaries of the Ministry of Industries, Lutfun Nahar Begum and Md Sanwar Hossain, also spoke at the event.
