Commemorative stamp released on Bangladesh naming day
The GPO has issued a commemorative stamp of Taka 10 denomination, an opening envelope of Tk 10 and a data card worth Tk 5
Post and Telecommunication Minister Mustafa Jabbar today released commemorative stamps and opening envelopes from his office in the city and inaugurated the data cards marking the day of naming East Pakistan as Bangladesh.
"On this historic day in 1969, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman announced the name of then East Pakistan as Bangladesh," Jabbar said on the occasion, according to a press release.
The minister said, "Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a young member of the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan, had given a speech in Karachi in 1957, protesting against the name 'East Pakistan' and saying that there was a history and tradition called East Bengal."
"He also said if East Pakistan has to be named, the public opinion of the people of Bengal has to be verified," he added.
The minister said that it was Bangabandhu who bravely opposed naming Bangladesh as 'East Pakistan' and named the country as Bangladesh.
The GPO has issued a commemorative stamp of Taka 10 denomination, an opening envelope of Tk 10 and a data card worth Tk 5. A special seal was used on this occasion.
The Philatelic Bureau of Dhaka GPO will sell commemorative stamps, opening envelopes and data cards from today. Later it will be sold from all GPOs and post offices in the country.
