Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Tuesday said the ban imposed on plying of rickshaws on three major thoroughfares in the capital will not hurt earnings of rickshaw-pullers.
“The city has around 20000-kilometre long roads and highways. Keeping just 10 kilometres off-limits to rickshaws will not affect their earnings,” he said while addressing a function at a city hotel in the afternoon.
Mentioning that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken traffic congestion issue very seriously, the DNCC mayor also talked about different initiatives taken by the DNCC to this end.
In an effort to ease the growing traffic congestion, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has imposed the ban on plying of rickshaws on three major thoroughfares from July 7,
The three roads are Kuril-Sayedabad road via Rampura and Khilgaon, Gabtoli to Azimpur via Asad Gate and Science Laboratory intersection to Shahbagh intersection.
