Dhaka South Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh has said all the activities of Dhaka South are intended to ensure proper services for the people of Dhaka.
"We are constructing Interim Waste Transfer Centres or Secondary Transfer Stations [STS] in each ward and ensuring waste removal management," said the mayor at the inauguration of a week-long free first aid service organised by Dhaka South, on Monday, in the capital, on the occasion of the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
"We are controlling mosquitoes and building community centres in every ward. We have taken control of the canals from the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority. We have already removed two lakh tonnes of waste-silt from canals and box culverts. As a result, water is flowing in the canals," he mentioned.
Mentioning the cleaning of sewers and infrastructure development activities to alleviate waterlogging, he said the authorities have also been undertaking initiatives to ensure primary healthcare in the Dhaka South area.
The mayor said the goal of the Dhaka South is to realise Golden Bengal, the dream of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
"Our beloved leader Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working towards that goal. Under her leadership, in just 12 years, we have achieved the capacity to build the Padma Bridge, become self-sufficient in power generation," he added.
"Just as the Father of the Nation liberated a subjugated nation in less than 30 years, his worthy daughter turned a low-income country into a middle-income country within 12 years," he continued.
The mayor said playgrounds are being set up for the new generation. The authorities have vacated the occupied properties in Ward 42 of Luxmibazar and created a playground for children, which will be inaugurated next Wednesday.
ABM Amin Ullah Nuri, Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation, delivered the welcome address at the function conducted by the Deputy Chief Health Officer of Dhaka South.
Among others, local councillors, women councillors of reserved seats, and local political leaders were present on the occasion.
Free first aid services will be provided from 8-10 March from Ward 1 to Ward 38 of Dhaka South and on 11-14 March in the remaining wards, every day from 9am to 3pm.
Various teams – comprising doctors, paramedics and assistants – will provide medical services from 9am to 3pm.
