Ajoy Roy passes away
The professor breathed his last at 12.35pm today at the capital's BIRDEM General Hospital
Renowned Professor Ajoy Roy, father of slain blogger Avijit Roy, passed away at 12.35pm today due to old age complications at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the capital's BIRDEM General Hospital.
BIRDEM authorities confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
Ajoy Roy was admitted to BIRDEM's ICU on November 25 with breathing problems and was on put on life support two days later, informed hospital sources.
Keya Barman, wife of Anujit Roy, younger son of Ajoy Roy, said, "We want to take my father in-law's body to the University of Dhaka and Shahid Minar to pay last respects by tomorrow."
She added that Ajoy Roy has donated his body to BIRDEM for scientific research.
Shahriyar Kabir, journalist, filmmaker and human rights activist, joined the ailing crowd at BIRDEM and said, "His [Ajoy Roy] greatest regret was that his son Avijit's case did not get as much attention from the state as Holey Artisan's case did. Even after running to and from the court at this age, the case did not see the light of justice. The absence of liberal thinking cannot be overcome with his death."
Ajoy Roy was one of the founders of Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee and played a key role as one of the senior advisors in the movement for the trial of war criminals.
