US Presidents who couldn't secure a second term

The final outcome of the US presidential election-2020 is now on a razor's edge as the two leading candidates are in a tight contest and one of them - Republican candidate Donald Trump - sought court's interference to settle his election issues.

But major projections say it is hardly possible for the incumbent to secure a second term in power. Saying anything certainly over trump's fate has now been too tough as the nail-biting situation may take a dramatic turn at any moment.

However, it will be unprecedented in this century if Donald Trump finally fails to win the reelection as recent US presidents - Barack Obama, George W Bush and Bill Clinton - became successful when they had run for second term in power.

The republicans are optimistic to retain the double-term streak when the democrats are hell-bent in giving a pause on it.

In the history of the United States, there are only ten presidents who lost the race for the second term. If the final result of Tuesday's election favours democrat candidate Joe Biden, Trump will be the 11th US president in losing the race for the White House in second term.

George Bush Sr

He, father of US President George W Bush, is the most recent president to have failed the race for re-election. He was defeated by Bill Clinton in 1992.

Before taking up the charge US president, he served CIA as chief.The US suffered a long recession during his stay in power that forced him to renege on a promise not to cut taxes.

The public backlash created by the recession coupled with competition from a popular and charismatic rival translated into his failure in the race for reelection.

Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter

Gerald Ford not only failed to win re-election, he was never voted in as president or even vice president in his own right, but fell into both roles thanks to circumstances of the time.

In 1973, he stepped up to the role of vice president after the controversial Spiro Agnew resigned. Then in 1974, he became president when Richard Nixon resigned as a result of the Watergate scandal.

He spent three years as president but was beaten by Jimmy Carter in the 1976 election. Carter also became a one-term president, beaten by Ronald Reagan in 1980.

Reagan managed to end the single-term streak and went on to win a second election in a landslide.

John Adams

John Adams was the second president of the USA who lost his race for a second term in power in 1800. He was defeated by Thomas Jefferson.

Others

Other presidents who also failed to win a second term in the 1800s were Martin Van Buren and Benjamin Harrison. Grover Cleveland didn't win a second term at the 1888 election but was elected again four years later.

In the 1900s, William Howard Taft and Herbert Hoover both failed to win second terms.
