Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has congratulated Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for their victory in the election as the next president and vice president of the United States of America.

Joseph Biden, 77, was elected the 46th president of the United States on 7 November, beating Donald Trump in a heated election.

The result also provided a history-making moment for Biden's running mate US Senator Kamala Harris, 56. She will become the first woman, first Black American, and first Asian-American to win the second-highest US office.

Biden, during his victory speech in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, promised he would work to unify a deeply divided country

However, incumbent President Donald Trump refused to accept defeat, saying, "This election is far from over."

Biden will assume White House on January 20, 2021, at the age of 78. He will be the oldest person ever to take office.
