West Bengal STF takes over probe of Chinese national arrested from Indo-Bangla border

The West Bengal Police's Special Task Force (STF) has taken up the investigation into the Chinese national who was detained last week along the India-Bangladesh international border in Malda district of India.

According to authorities, when he was caught in the early hours of Thursday, the man held a genuine Chinese passport, reports India Today.

The Chinese individual was apprehended near the border area in Malda, West Bengal, according to BSF authorities. When questioned by troops, he did not provide a sufficient response. Agencies involved, as well as the local police, were notified right away.

Security officials discovered a Chinese passport with a Bangladeshi visa, a laptop, and three mobile phone SIM cards on the individual identified as Junwei Han.

"On 10 June, a Chinese national was intercepted by BSF troops in area of Malda, West Bengal. Interview of the individual is presently underway by concerned agencies," a senior BSF official told India Today TV.

As per BSF, Han Junwei, admitted during the interrogation that he reached Dhaka on a business visa and stayed there with a Chinese friend.

The Lucknow Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) had registered a case against Junwei, due to which he was not able to get an Indian visa in China. However, he managed to get a visa from Bangladesh and Nepal and came to India.

A local court on 12 June remanded Han Junwei in police custody for six days.
