Skin-whitening creams have a huge market in South Asia, but the way their makers promote the products have come under question

Unilever Bangladesh Limited (UBL) today announced the next step in the evolution of its skin care portfolio to a more inclusive vision of 'Positive Beauty,' and introduces 'Glow & Lovely', the new name for the 'Fair & Lovely' brand.

In 2019, the brand's communication moved away from benefits of fairness, whitening and skin lightening, towards glow, even tone, skin clarity and radiance which are holistic measures of healthy skin.

After availing necessary approvals over the next few months, Glow & Lovely will be on the shelves and future innovations will deliver on this new proposition.

The Men's range of 'Fair & Lovely' will be called 'Glow & Handsome'.

The move comes a week after the maker of Lipton Tea and Dove soap announced that it would drop words such as "fair," "fairness," "white,", "whitening" from its marketing in a push to move away from a single ideal of beauty.

Skin-whitening creams have a huge market in South Asia, but the way their makers promote the products have come under question, at a time of worldwide focus on racial injustice following weeks of protests sparked by the May death of George Floyd, a Black man, in police custody in the United States.
