Bengal BJP leader Rahul Sinha banned from campaigning for 48 hours

India's West Bengal BJP leader Rahul Sinha has been banned from campaigning for 48 hours by the election commission over "provocative statements" and "inciting" central forces.

Earlier, on 12 April evening, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was banned from campaigning in Bengal for 24 hours this evening over speeches that the Election Commission said violated the rules, reports NDTV.

Banerjee's Trinamool Congress had asked for action against Rahul Sinha and BJP's Bengal chief Dilip Ghosh for what it called ''inflammatory'' remarks on the Cooch Behar firing.

On Saturday, four people were killed in Sitalkuchi in Cooch Behar when central forces opened fire after a mob attacked a polling booth.

The Trinamool complained to the election body that BJP leaders were "instigating" violence with warnings of more such incidents.

Mamata was accused of breaking the law with her comments on Muslim votes and for allegedly urging voters to revolt against central security forces.

The ban till 8 pm on Tuesday - outgoing Election Commissioner Sunil Arora's final order - came half-way through the Bengal election, with four more rounds of voting left in an intense campaign pitting Mamata Banerjee against a galaxy of BJP leaders including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
