Netanyahu used same Iran pitch on Trump as he did on him, Obama tells The New Yorker
In an interview with The New Yorker, Obama said he had remained unconvinced more than a decade ago that military strikes would effectively address the threats posed by Iran, suggesting those doubts remain relevant in light of recent US actions.
Former US President Barack Obama has said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used the same arguments to persuade Donald Trump to launch military action against Iran as he had presented to Obama during his presidency, according to The New Yorker.
In an interview with The New Yorker, Obama said he had remained unconvinced more than a decade ago that military strikes would effectively address the threats posed by Iran, suggesting those doubts remain relevant in light of recent US actions.
Reflecting on the aftermath of the strikes, Obama said Washington is still dealing with many of the same trade-offs that critics had raised regarding the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran.
He said Netanyahu may have achieved his immediate objective by securing US military involvement, but questioned whether such a move ultimately serves the long-term interests of Israel.
Obama also raised concerns about the implications for the United States, adding that there has long been a record of differences between himself and Netanyahu over how to approach Iran's nuclear programme.
