Hilsa

Hilsa

Huge amount of Hilsas caught in the Bay of Bengal are heaped up for sale in Fisherighat, the largest wholesale market of seafishes in the port city of Chattogram. The photo was taken on Saturday. Photo: Minhaj Uddin

Marine fishing increases by 1.40 lakh tonnes in a decade

The government put priority on sea resources, and took initiatives to both conserve and to increase the yield. It banned fishing in the Bay of Bengal for 65 days every year.

In contrast to a sharp rise in the overall Hilsa population and production in the country, the number of Padma Hilsa is diminishing due to an insufficient period of ban on fishing aimed at preserving the stock. Photo: Mumit M
