Super Star looks beyond rooftops as renewable energy demand grows
From rooftop installations to battery storage and irrigation systems, Super Star Renewable Energy Ltd. says Bangladesh's renewable energy market is entering a new phase of growth
Bangladesh's energy landscape is changing rapidly. As industrialisation accelerates and cities continue to expand, electricity demand is rising every year. Relying solely on imported fossil fuels is becoming increasingly difficult due to higher import costs, pressure on foreign exchange reserves and volatility in global energy markets. I believe solar energy offers Bangladesh a practical and sustainable solution by reducing dependence on imported fuels while strengthening the country's long-term energy security.
At Super Star Renewable Energy Ltd. (SSREL), our goal extends beyond installing solar panels. We see ourselves as long-term energy partners for industries, commercial organisations, government agencies and the agricultural sector. Over the past 13 years, we have built the engineering expertise and project management capability needed to deliver reliable renewable energy solutions across Bangladesh.
One of our proudest achievements has been delivering more than 100MW of rooftop solar capacity across industries ranging from textiles and garments to pharmaceuticals, ceramics, food processing and manufacturing. We have also deployed over 2,500 solar irrigation pumps and, through our network of more than 200 authorised dealers, helped install over 400,000 solar home systems across the country. Beyond the numbers, however, what matters most is the trust our clients continue to place in us through repeat projects and long-term partnerships.
The market itself has evolved significantly in recent years. Businesses once viewed solar primarily as an environmental initiative, but today it has become a business decision driven by rising electricity prices, energy security concerns and growing sustainability commitments. Export-oriented industries, in particular, are increasingly investing in renewable energy as international buyers place greater emphasis on lower carbon footprints and ESG compliance. We are also seeing strong interest from hospitals, universities, logistics facilities and commercial buildings.
Despite this momentum, several challenges continue to slow adoption. Lengthy approval processes for net-metering projects, grid integration issues and limited access to affordable financing remain key obstacles. Many businesses, especially SMEs, are still discouraged by the initial investment despite the substantial savings solar systems generate over their 20 to 25-year lifespan. Greater policy support, faster approvals and improved financing mechanisms would significantly accelerate the country's renewable energy transition.
Innovation has always been central to our strategy. Alongside conventional rooftop solar, we now provide Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), hybrid solar solutions, smart energy management systems, SCADA-based remote monitoring and high-efficiency solar technologies. Our objective is not simply to install systems but to help customers optimise their entire energy ecosystem through intelligent, reliable solutions.
For businesses considering solar, I always emphasise that it should be viewed as a long-term investment rather than an expense. Beyond reducing electricity costs, solar provides protection against future tariff increases, improves energy security, strengthens sustainability credentials and enhances competitiveness in international markets. Every project is supported by detailed energy assessments and financial modelling to ensure clients understand the expected returns before making their investment.
Our priorities include expanding into battery storage, hybrid energy systems, commercial microgrids and industrial decarbonisation solutions. Renewable energy in Bangladesh is no longer viewed solely as an environmental responsibility; it is increasingly recognised as a sound business strategy. With supportive policies, faster implementation and greater investment, I am confident Bangladesh can unlock the full potential of clean energy and build a more resilient, sustainable future.
