The Indian Premier League (IPL) was postponed indefinitely on May 4 after a rise in Covid-19 cases inside the bio-bubble. Many of the overseas players have started returning home while some of them have been stuck in India.
Two Bangladeshi players- Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman had been stuck in India for the time being but both of them returned home on Thursday afternoon.
Shakib and Mustafizur must undergo a mandatory 14-day institutional quarantine on arrival in Bangladesh.
A Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official, citing anonymity, confirmed the news to The Business Standard (TBS).
According to the BCB official, they landed in Dhaka at 3:30 pm BST. Shakib and Mustafizur returned home taking the same flight.
While Shakib will be quarantining at Four Points by Sheraton, Mustafiz and his wife will quarantine at Pan Pacific Sonargaon in the city.
Wasim Khan, BCB's logistic supports officer, also confirmed it saying, "They caught a charter flight from Ahmedabad and head to Dhaka."
Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals, their respective franchises, will carry part of the total expense. Since the franchises arranged the flight, the BCCI didn't have to worry.
As the Bangladesh government has closed flights and border with India due to the Corona outbreak in India, Shakib and Mustafizur now have to return home under special arrangements.
Earlier, the BCB appealed to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) for the remission of 14-day quarantine but it was informed that there is no way they could skip that.
According to the previous plan, Shakib and Mustafiz were scheduled to return to Bangladesh from the IPL on May 19 to play a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka at home.
However, as the IPL was suspended indefinitely, they returned to the country ahead of schedule.
They will join the Bangladesh team at the end of the 14-day institutional quarantine.
After that Shakib-Mustafiz will play will face Sri Lanka in the first ODI on May 23 after practising for one or two days.
The second and third ODIs will be played on May 25 and 26.
