BCB President Nazmul Hasan explained the head coach situation at Dhanmondi after returning from a ICC meeting.

Hathurusinghe might be a candidate for the vacant head coach position of Bangladesh cricket team, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hasan has said.

After returning from a ICC meeting, the BCB President explained the head coach situation in a press conference at Dhanmondi.

After being asked if the former Bangladesh head coach and current Sri lanka head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe could be appointed as the head coach again, the BCB President replied, “The series with Hathurusinghe’s Sri Lanka is about to start, so we absolutely can not talk to him. So, what I think is that the information is not correct. But if he is on a break after the series and is interested to join us, he will also be a candidate like the ones with whom we will talk. But till now, we have not talked to anyone specifically.”

When asked about when BCB wanted to appoint a new coach for the team, Nazmul hasan was straightforward with his answer. He said, “We are wanting to appoint a coach as soon as possible. But the problem is, the contract of some coaches have not ended after the World Cup. So, those who are stuck, we are talking to some of them. From them we’ll make a shortlist and make a final decision after checking on that.”

There was a rumour that there might be an update about the coach situation on the 27th of this month, but the BCB President seemed to be in doubt about that. He said, “We’re not sure that we can provide an update on the 27th of this month, but our procedure is going on. It is not only one coach, we are looking for a head coach, a bowling coach and a physio. We are trying to make a decision not only judging someone by his name or past experiences, we are trying to make a cool-headed decision.”

Asked if Gary Kirsten’s opinion would be taken to appoint the new coach, the President answered, “This time we will be taking the decision ourselves. We might take opinions from others, but the decision will be made by us.”

BCB parted ways with head coach Steve Rhodes, fast bowling coach Courtney Walsh and Physio Tihan Chandramohan after the team finished a lackluster World Cup campaign finishing eighth on the points table. Khaled Mahmud Sujon will be working as the interim head coach for the Sri Lanka series.
