Asia Cup cancellation will cost BCB Tk 25 crores

The whole cricketing world has been in a mix due to the coronavirus pandemic. A lot of series have been postponed and the last on line was the Asia Cup 2020.

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) will try to arrange the tournament in some time around June 2021. But if they can not find a suitable time, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will face a huge loss.

Due to the postponement of many series, the next year will be packed with cricket as the teams will try to catch up with their cricketing schedule. That might affect the Asia Cup and if it does not happen, BCB will face a loss of USD 3 million or Tk 25 crores.

Not just BCB, every team set to be a part of the tournament will face the same loss. This USD 3 million is generally the prize money for participation in the tournament.

There are other calculations of loss too. Every team earns from the sponsors and broadcasters. So, the loss will eventually be bigger than the current estimated amount but BCB is not focusing on that right now.

BCB CEO Nizam Uddin Chowdhury told The Business Standard, "The tournament has been postponed for a year. Preparations are going on to arrange it next year. But if the Asia Cup is cancelled for some reason, the teams will face a financial loss. The teams will not receive the USD 3 million for participating if the tournament is cancelled."

ACC waited till the very last moment before postponing the Asia Cup and had to as the Covid-19 situation in South Asia did not improve.
