The Wire actor James Ransone dies at 46
US actor James Ransone, best known for his role as Ziggy Sobotka in the acclaimed crime drama The Wire, has died at the age of 46, officials confirmed on Sunday.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office said Ransone died by suicide. No further details were released.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1979, Ransone built a career as a distinctive character actor, frequently portraying men shaped by troubled pasts. His most recognisable performance came in the second season of HBO's The Wire, set in his home city, where he appeared in 12 episodes as Ziggy Sobotka, a dock worker drawn into Baltimore's criminal underworld.
Ransone later reunited with HBO in the mini-series Generation Kill (2008), starring alongside Alexander Skarsgård as US Marine Corporal Josh Ray Person. His film career included notable roles in It: Chapter Two, where he played the adult Eddie Kaspbrak, and the horror thriller The Black Phone.
His more recent screen appearances included the television series Poker Face and the forthcoming Black Phone 2. Other credits spanned films such as V/H/S/85 and Small Engine Repair, as well as TV shows including Seal Team and The First.
Ransone studied at the Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Maryland and began his career in the early 2000s, earning his breakthrough role in The Wire in 2003.
