An ode to urban nostalgia
Flamboyant and colorful kites have returned to make the afternoons an escape from the never-ending quarantine achiness

The sky was never as beautiful as it is now.
Flamboyant and colorful kites have returned to make the afternoons an escape from the never-ending quarantine achiness.
The neighbours are also getting to know each other these days, and biding a warm hello and sometimes a smile from the other side.
In the past few years, flying kites was reduced to a celebrated segment, and mostly took place only during the Shakrain festival.
It seemed what once used to be a regular leisure for young and teenagers in the city, had lost its charm to the devouring social networking and the hustle-bustle of city-dwellers.
But all of a sudden, as the unending staying home hours has reduced the week to three days (yes, many feel the same way), people are reuniting with stuff from their old chest.
One of them is watching beautiful kites flying high in the blue skies – which has become an absolute delightful afternoon sight.
Are bored of binge-watching the same series over and over again? Or do you feel too dizzy to crawl back to bed?
If yes, bring out old newspapers, a couple of sticks from a broom, scissors, threads, and scotch tapes and pull off a DIY to make your desired shape of the kite. You can also take help from YouTube tutorials.
Sometimes, a simple kite-flying can get intense as well.
Once I saw two boys bickering at each other where both of their kites were cut somehow. Both kept on claiming to be the winner while a girl had her keen eyes over the fight.
And while flying kites on the rooftop, people are frequently meeting their neighbours, and hence becoming social offline. However, due to the coronavirus, this socialising is taking place by maintaining physical distance. Many friendships are booming in these shutdowns.
Due to the ongoing shutdowns, many people have not seen their near and dear ones for a while.
In such situation, a face-to-face conversation with a neighbour can be a great relief.
While conversing, you may even find out that both of you have a lot more in common to discuss and laugh about.
The sight of afternoon rooftops has made a major throwback to a beautiful nostalgia.
Amidst the silent chaos, this certainly is a serene feeling for us.
