Netflix drops first look at Mourinho documentary

Netflix has unveiled the first look at 'Mourinho', an upcoming three-part documentary series exploring the turbulent and trophy-laden career of the iconic Portuguese football manager. Slated for a global premiere on 11 August, the project is helmed by the exact same team that delivered the recent hit David Beckham docuseries.

The newly released trailer opens in vintage José Mourinho fashion. Walking viewers through a personal trophy room filled with treasures like Diego Maradona's signed boots and Cristiano Ronaldo's first professional shirt, he delivers a classic, self-assured quip: "I started winning in 2003, and my last title was 2022. So it was 20 years of winning. That's why you want to tell my story. You don't do a documentary with a guy that wins nothing."

Directed by Joe Pearlman and produced by Oscar-winner John Battsek, the series was quietly filmed over the past two years. It anchors its narrative on the 20th anniversary of Mourinho's shocking 2004 Champions League victory with FC Porto. From there, it traces his explosive managerial stints at European giants including Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and his current chapter with Fenerbahçe.

Beyond the silverware, the series promises an unfiltered look at his fierce rivalry with Pep Guardiola and his highly publicised club exits. It also features heavyweight interviews from football legends, boasting appearances by Sir Alex Ferguson, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Didier Drogba, John Terry, Samuel Eto'o, and Iker Casillas. Ultimately, the documentary aims to capture a more reflective side of the veteran coach as he unpacks his own complex legacy.
